Sunless tanning allows you to give your skin a golden glow without needing to spend time in the sun. Properly preparing for your tanning session will ensure your tan looks great and lasts as long as possible. Follow these tips to get the best results from your sunless tan.
Moisturize Your Skin
For three to five days before your appointment, moisturize your skin every day to ensure an even, natural-looking tan. Do NOT use a moisturizer on the day of your appointment or immediately after your sunless tan. Wait until after your first shower.
Exfoliate
Exfoliation is one of the most important steps to prepare for a sunless tan. Dry skin will cause a sunless tan to look less natural. Exfoliate your skin the night before your appointment to remove dry, dead skin cells. This will allow the skin to deeply absorb the sunless tanner and give you a natural, golden glow. Avoid using bar soaps or in-shower moisturizers—they can interfere with the DHA bronzing process and create the dreaded orange appearance.
Shave
It’s important to shave before you tan. However, shaving immediately before tanning can cause skin irritation. Shave your legs at least 12 hours before your tanning appointment. If you prefer waxing instead of shaving, schedule your waxing appointment at least 24 hours before your tanning session.
Avoid Makeup and Lotion
On the day of your appointment, do not apply makeup, perfume, or lotion. These can prevent the spray tan from being absorbed properly. It would be best if you also skipped the deodorant—it may interact with the tanning spray.
Wear Dark, Loose Clothing
Your sunless tan can rub off on tight clothing. Wear loose-fitting clothing to your tanning session, and avoid wearing jewelry. Stick with dark clothes to avoid unintentionally staining your clothing.
